“SPEAK ON LIBERTY”

Monumental 1986 People’s Masterpiece

Location: 640 Lincoln Road
Promoters: Mel Schlesser, CityKids, and IMMUSE
Artist: HVY (Creative Director of IMMUNE)

Speak On Liberty

1111 Lincoln Road

November 22 - January 2023

The Lincoln Road Business Improvement District (BID) has partnered with The CityKids Foundation to exhibit artist Keith Haring + CityKids’ “Speak on Liberty” artwork, a monumental 90’ x 30’ banner that became the largest freestanding and most important piece ever created by Haring. The iconic “Peoples Masterpiece” will be unveiled on November 28 and showcased at 1111 Lincoln Road, an uber-modernist building designed by Herzog & de Meuron at the southeast corner of Lincoln Road and Lenox Avenue. Timed with Art Week, the piece will be visible to art enthusiasts and locals from mid-November 2022 through mid-January 2023.

In 1986, Keith Haring worked with the CityKids organization and 1000 kids in NYC to create an 90′ tall mural titled “CityKids Speak On Liberty” comprised of Keith’s dark outlines of his iconic dancing figures and the Statue of Liberty. When asked why the statue’s arm was made from oddly curved lines, Haring’s off-the-cuff response was “because liberty is wobbly.” 36 years later… in 2022, liberty is not only still wobbly, but seemingly broken into many pieces as the US struggles with maintaining a sense of social cohesion and its cultural and political divisions appear to grow worse each year.

Influenced by the DIY skateboard graphics of the 80’s and the physics-bending capabilities of 3D engines, HVY’s digital work often synthesizes analog, hand-drawn designs with hyperreal renders. HVY’s “Because Liberty is Broken” is not only a play on Haring’s “wobbly” comment but also an homage to the original hand-drawn aesthetic and to the collaborative process. As a part of the original mural creation, Haring and CityKids curated the kids’ thoughts on liberty and freedom and had them paint those thoughts onto the massive canvas. For this mural, HVY re-drew many of the hand-drawn pictures and words from the original work and he wrote the prompts for the interactive collaboration such as: “I commit to help…” “I commit to love…” “I commit to open my mind…” “I will rebuild liberty…”

Over the course of Miami Art Week, “Because Liberty is Broken” will be displayed in the 640 Lincoln Road space and participants are invited to collaborate with HVY and CityKids to write directly onto the broken pieces of 3D version of the Haring’s torch from the original “City Kids Speak on Liberty” mural. Selected participants will complete one of the prompts and sign their names to the broken torch handle. It is only through collaboration that the mural can be completed as a participative reflection that it’s only through the larger social, cultural, and political collaboration can liberty be restored for all and the flame handed safely to future generations.

The Florence Academy of Art

Daniela-Graves-Surviver-of-Abstract-Art-800x1090

The Florence Academy of Art

“I am not part of a post contemporary movement. I am connected to a tradition that never ever stopped.”

– Daniel Graves, Founder

Academy of drawing and painting classes in realistic painting and drawing from Florence, Italy

New Jersey

All Florence Academy faculty must be accomplished artists committed to developing the creative, artistic, technical and intellectual capabilities of each student. In addition, they must also be able to address the particular needs of the MA in Studio Art candidates, that is, versed in the specific needs of today’s K-12 teacher.

Daniel Graves founded The Florence Academy of Art in 1991 with a handful of students in a small studio in the gardens of a Florentine palace. He chose Florence to surround them with some of the greatest artwork in history. This daily encounter with beauty naturally influences the students’ work, as they look to examples from the past to learn the language of classical art and endeavour to understand how the masters created works of such universal significance.  Today, the school is housed in a 35,000 square foot former customs house, just outside the city center, a short walk from the Arno River and the monuments of Florence. The antique structure, with its soaring ceilings and abundant natural light, has been transformed into a campus for realism: 30 north lit classrooms, a gallery, library, cafe, private studios for faculty and apartments for visiting artists. In 2007, the Florence Academy opened a branch campus in Mölndal, Sweden, and in 2020, inaugurated the Master of Arts in Studio Art.

What is
The FAA?

Students who apply to The Florence Academy of Art seek the language of Rembrandt, Velasquez, Titian and Sargent, and the tools to convey their ideas with confidence through the oil or clay mediums. A common visual aesthetic draws them to the classical world (and its renaissance in Florence) to build an artistic vocabulary where beauty and humanity are intrinsic to art. When students walk in the door of the Florence Academy, they are assigned a north light studio space, and settle into a rhythm of working that will remain constant throughout their years of study: half the day working from the figure, half of the day on specific exercises in their studios, and in the evenings attending lessons in Anatomy, Art History, materials & techniques.

Mission

The Mission Statement was written in 1995, and has changed only slightly over the years. We may not refer to it often, but it remains the guiding principal of our school, and underlies our philosophy, curriculum and teaching, and all of our decision-making:

To provide the highest level of instruction in classical methods of drawing, painting and sculpture for students wishing to pursue careers as professional artists in the Realist tradition.

Philosophy

The Florence Academy of Art is a small and dynamic center dedicated to the training of artists through the combination of intense observation with advanced craft skills.  The curriculum derives from the classical-realist tradition rooted in the 19th century (most particularly exemplified by the French Academies in the teaching of master painters like Gérôme, Bonnat and Carolus Duran) but also addresses the creative and professional position of the artist in a contemporary environment.

It is the view of this Academy that throughout the 20th century prominent movements of art have steadily drawn attention (and teaching) away from close observation of the material world and the acquisition of strong technical skills, to a position where cohesive artistic thought is inexorably fragmented by the urge towards greater individual expression.

The Academy therefore provides students with the opportunity to explore distinctive aspects of their chosen subject through the development of considerable powers of draftsmanship, direct study of works of the Old Masters and a deep, practical understanding of the materials and methods of the artist.  By this means, and through the resulting identification of clear artistic objectives, students acquire creative self-confidence, visual understanding and subtle and precise powers of description.

Study at the Academy centers upon the importance of drawing (particularly drawing from the human figure) as a means to gaining skill in painting or sculpture.  Through intense observation students acquire a visual literacy that enables them to interpret humanist values in their work, and, ultimately, seek to create a work of universal relevance.

The program, like that of the French Academies, is based upon systematic progression through the classical disciplines, interpreting the basic elements of composition, form, color harmony and expression.  Advancement to each level of study is dependent upon successful completion of the previous level.  In this way, the program is carefully matched to each individual and not imposed in a ‘study group’ context.

Institutional Goals

In summary, the Academy aims to train artists to:

  • draw to a very high standard
  • execute works in painting or sculpture to high levels of professional craftsmanship
  • acquire a deep understanding of the works and methods of the Old Masters
  • acquire a sound awareness of commercial practices in Fine Art

Founder’s

Message

“As I considered formalizing a course of study for students interested in realism, I first of all envisioned a school based on the time-tested principles that had produced the great, varied body of realist art. It would not promote a specific style, rather offer a complete classical education including humanities, art history, anatomy, ecorché, composition, and perspective, all at the service of drawing, painting and sculpture. It would inspire and encourage the individual, whatever the level of talent, and promote individuality and original thought. It would embrace open dialogue within the studio, and among other artists and institutions that share an interest in the development of classical realism. This vision has become The Florence Academy of Art today.” – Daniel Graves, Founder

The Florence Academy of Art emerged from a collection of ideas based on my own search for information on master techniques, my personal experiences or frustrations with art education during my formative years, and my knowledge of the past. After co-running Studio Cecil-Graves for eight years, I had come to some important realizations about what was effective and what was not. Years of trial and error followed, with more successes than failures, and now it is my students who are carrying on the tradition, adding in kind their own improvements to it.

There was no exact educational model for me to draw from; the ateliers of the 19th century were an inspiration to be sure, but they were limited in their scope, often based on the personality of a single master painter. True, they produced great artists, but eventually died out. This was a formula I did not want to repeat.

With this firmly in mind, I first of all envisioned a school based on the time-tested principles that had produced the great, varied body of realist art. It would not promote a specific style rather offer a complete classical education including humanities, art history, anatomy, ecorché, composition, and perspective, all at the service of drawing, painting and sculpture.

The Florence Academy of Art would inspire and encourage the individual, whatever the level of talent, and promote individuality and original thought.

It would embrace open dialogue within the studio, and among other artists and institutions that share an interest in the development of classical realism.

It would one day be permanently established in a single location so that future students of classical realism would have a place to study.

These thoughts have greatly influenced all my decisions over the past 21 years. The momentum to realize them has only grown thanks to loyal and dedicated students who continue to search out the Florence Academy as their school of choice.

I knew to make my vision take shape and grow I needed someone to add a perspective that was practical and logistical. An artist can remain deep in his art, in his own world. I could have had all the theory, but needed a colleague to make it real. When I met Susan Tintori I found another educator who shared my dream for a great school based on high standards. We made many sacrifices through the years to stay on course; thanks to this, we have never needed succumb to lowering our standards or diluting our mission in order to survive.

The Academy’s curriculum is designed to take a student at any skill level and advance their ability to represent nature. More specifically we teach, what we refer to as “structural realism;” this means we stress observation and an accurate translation of nature. We endeavor not to copy nature mindlessly, the result of this is often banal and lifeless, but rather truthfully engage in the representation of our personal vision of the subject or idea. Individuality is paramount in the final work; to underestimate this would be a failure at the most profound level.

I also envisioned a school based on selfless education, where no single individual’s ego would influence a student’s outcome. I felt one of the things that was so essential to the school environment was professionalism between teachers and students, where the importance of every individual had to be first priority. From the start, I sought to form a group of likeminded artists, trained at the Florence Academy, who have a profound understanding of its mission, and can continue the ethos of the studio environment as I had originally envisioned it. At various stages, key faculty provided invaluable innovations to the curriculum and methodology that have enriched the program and enhanced student progress.

Finally, I sought to create an institution that would live beyond me, and for this reason, The Florence Academy of Art does not bear my name. For this reason, too, I believe our mission is not only to train fine artists but also to actively prepare the next generation of teachers. This is how our culture is passed from one generation to the next. I see proof of this everyday as I walk through our studios.

The Florence Academy of Art needed to be a place where I would have wanted to study. I felt sure that if I could offer the kind of training in the environment I had sought as an art student, then it would be the right place for others, too. I believe we have achieved this; we have taken the technical and intellectual standards of the small atelier system, with its emphasis on individualized instruction, and applied them with success to an institution with over 100 students.

When asked to speak about the Academy, I find myself telling the story of its development, or the daily routine of studio life. What I cannot describe but see so vividly are the faces of the hundreds of students who have studied with us, and the many more hundreds of drawings, paintings and sculptures they have made. This is for me is the true value of The Florence Academy of Art.

PINTA CONCEPT – MIAMI ART FAIR 2022

This year, in its 16th anniversary and after highly transformative events, Pinta ventures into a new concept. New formats, and many other exciting ingredients will make up Pinta 2022.

In a blend format which combines premier technology with the glamor of gathering in-person, Pinta 2022 will provide an experience unlike no other. Artists, curators, gallery owners, collectors and art lovers will reunite for the best of what Latin American and Spanish creators have been working on; passionately and relentlessly in the face of a global crisis and its aftermath.

In line with Pinta’s commitment as an international platform to energize and disseminate Ibero American modern and contemporary art, and with a stronger-than-ever bond to its Latin American roots, this year’s edition brings forth an artistic program which includes diverse and interdisciplinary expositions and carefully articulated sections.

While the Main Section will host established galleries, this year’s edition of Pinta will provide a stronger emphasis to Solo-Duo and Next (emergent artist). Working with esteemed curators Félix Suazo, Oscar Roldán and Florencia Portocarrero, these two sections will highlight the individual voices of artists who inspire courage and originality. Last but not least, the Editions section will distinguish itself with graphic pieces. All of Pinta’s sections will, of course, be complemented by Pinta Live: where the global public will not only gain access to the fair, but much more too.

As part of Pinta’s online affair, and transcending borders of all kinds, Pinta hosts Media Point, a digital section with unique audiovisual content: talks with experts (LiveTalks), insights on the artists’ work (OpenFile) and custom Live Virtual Tours.

Pinta Concept thus becomes an exceptional showcase which not only highlights the outstanding quality of Latin American art, but also combines exclusivity and long-standing acclaim to enhance the voice of artists and their social, cultural and ecological concerns. It blends the physical with the online, and connects art lovers with art makers; Pinta is more than a fair, it’s a concept.

CURATORS

While the Main Section will house established galleries (Omar-Pascual Castillo and Mario Gioia), Pinta Miami 2022 will place a greater emphasis on the sincere artistic discourses of the Solo-Duo Projects section (Oscar Roldán Alzate) and the enlightened bravery of Special Projects (Félix Suazo). Finally, the Editions section will be distinguished by its graphic pieces. Diego Costa Peuser

Diego Costa Peuser is a cultural manager specialized in Latin American art. In this field, he has led various initiatives that allowed the greater and better understanding of artistic creation in the region.

Diego Costa Peuser is the director of the Arte al Día International magazine, founded 41 years ago by Jorge Costa Peuser and considered a leader among the media specialized in Ibero-American art. In this way, he has contributed to the recognition of movements and developments of artistic modernity. Arte al Día International has built a unique archive of reviews, interviews, profiles and news that show the exponential growth of the artistic ecosystem in the region and the world.

As co-creator and director of influential art fairs in Buenos Aires, Lima, Miami, New York, London and, soon, Basel, Diego Costa Peuser has promoted a change in the outlook of these metropolises, epicenters of cultural activity, on the nature and historical incidence of American artists. Whether in relation to the avant-garde, as well as to current contemporary creation, the projects directed by Costa Peuser open a dialogue between different practices from the North and the South. In this sense, he has promoted re-readings of art history that have turned the recognition of transcendental works and figures.

Committed to the present, Diego Costa Peuser faces challenges with social conscience and responsibility. In 2010 he was distinguished as one of the 100 most influential Hispanics in Florida and from 2011 to 2015 he served on the Miami Board of the TECHO Foundation. For this foundation, and within the framework of Art Basel Miami Beach, he organized the ‘Art Techos’ event that brought together prominent artists in order to raise funds for the construction of houses in less favored sectors of the continent. During the Covid-19 pandemic, Diego’s projects provided uninterrupted support and dissemination through innovative virtual platforms. Forward thinking and faithful to progress, the PINTA fairs will be developed in a hybrid format (virtual and in-person) to facilitate access and maximize their reach.

His work as projects and media director has been one of the factors in the growing attraction of the Ibero-American artistic language. It has crossed borders and energized the market, providing unique opportunities for all sectors and art agents.

K. O’Neill is a “20-something” Puerto Rican artist from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Primarily working in the female form and expressive profiles, O’Neill focuses on bold usage of color to vividly convey emotions in a way she feels words cannot often do. O’Neill is currently a psychology doctoral student and is an advocate for reducing the stigma surrounding mental health treatment through her work and interviews. O’Neill’s work aims to empower her audience to be bold and undiluted in their emotional expression in an era flooded with the glamorization of mental illness, internet ‘perfection’, and the rise of the influencer, intent on empowering her audience to embrace nuances of their own mental health in a way that embraces the good, the bad, and the not Instagram-worthy. As her work largely is up-close portraiture of deindividualized faces reduced to their most basic components, the focus of each piece is a facial expression, with colors chosen for translative emphasis. From her core, O’Neill’s goal for her work is to create beautiful, touching pieces with themes that are not beautiful, showing the duality of struggle and resilience. O’Neill is currently based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and has exhibited works in multiple venues across the Mid-Atlantic/Northeastern region of the United States, including Manhattan, NY, and Philadelphia, PA.

Artist Statement:
In many ways, my work has adopted a voice of its own. Specifically, I’ve found that I am worth more as an artist in being an authentic human being than in my work simply being ‘pretty’ by gallery and buyer standards. Initially, I did not intend to exhibit my work, as my earliest pieces were created as testaments to times and emotions that I didn’t want to discuss amid processing my mental health struggles. Growing up, I often felt the need to water down my feelings to overcome them- not letting the problems bubble up to the surface, associating emotionality with vulnerability and weakness. Part of this is easily attributed to cultural biases and birth order, but I digress. After realizing the utility of connection and the power of connecting with strangers on mental health, I have embraced the vulnerability knowing now it is strength to do so. In openly discussing thematic representations of trauma and my struggle with panic disorder, my work is my contribution to the plight of destigmatizing mental health conditions. My portrayal of unattractive feelings (e.g., hurt, sadness, anger) in pastel shades is representative of cognitive dissonance and societal pressure to maintain a ‘pretty face’. My work is unapologetically loud and vivid in a way I would’ve balked at years ago, dedicated to the fine line between aggression, vulnerability, and sensuality and the tightrope between feeling “not enough” and “too much” as a woman. These themes are often tied together by the color blue, symbolizing my pieces’ emotional depth and beckoning the audience to look beneath the surface and, therefore, look within.
