Exhibition title: Decisive Metaphors: Rem(on) Díaz in Retrospect.Curated by Havana-based curator and art historian Yenny Hernández Valdés, and Miami-based William Riera, founder and editor of SoFLaFoto. Opening date: Friday, 05/07/2021On view from 05/07/2021 to 06/12/2021Rem(o)n Díaz (aka David Díaz) @fotoarteremon (Havana, 1972) is a Hispanic-Cuban Miami-based photographer, born in Havana, Cuba. He is a self-taught photographer who started his career around the year 2009 while living in the Canary Isles, Spain. Born as David Díaz, he likes to be known as Rem(o)n, which is the result of his admiration of Portuguese poet and writer Fernando Pessoa, one of the most significant literary figures of the 20th century. As Pessoa, who liked to write under imaginary figures known as heteronyms, he felt that his name, David, did not represent his true spirit. Being the son of Cuban film director and writer Rolando Díaz, since his childhood, he was exposed to the art of motion pictures and storytelling. From his mother and his uncle Jesús Díaz, an accomplished writer, he developed a love for literature and poetry. As a young man, he started to write and for a while, he was devoted to his stories and poems. That’s how when he was 22 years old he wrote a short story where the main character’s name was Remon, and that’s how he adopted this name when the then-writer turned into a photographer. Rem(o)n has learned photography by himself, devoting not only to learn about the technical aspects of it but also the art of image-making. His images are snapshots of reality filtered through his creative mind, being everything instinctively connected. In 2013 Rem(o)n received an award in the travel photography category from Sony Community Contest. In 2013 and 2014, his work was awarded the Dubai’s Hamdan International Photography Award in two different categories. In 2015, he was awarded an Honorable Mention by the second edition of the Miami Photo Salon held in Miami, Florida. In 2017, he was the Finalist of the One Eyeland Photography Awards. He has exhibited his work in different individual and collective exhibitions in the USA and Spain.
