A Resonance of Masters

Picasso, Miró, Valdés

November 2022, New York – Opera Gallery Miami is pleased to present an exhibition of essential works by Spanish masters Joan Miró, Picasso, and Manolo Valdés. The show will be on view to the public from November 29th through December 20th, 2022.

Miró, Personnage (Character), 1974
Miró, Personnage (Character), 1974

The powerful exhibition will attest to the ongoing artistic resonance of the 20th and 21st centuries through the lens of the three artists. By exploring Picasso and Miró’s artistic legacy and sensibilities, Manolo Valdés, represented by Opera Gallery since 2017, pays homage to both artists through the use of geometrical shapes and colors reminiscent of theirs in theme and principle. The choice of subjects in Valdés is a clear reference to the modern period of art history, specifically to Spanish Masters. At the same time, the aesthetics of the geometry of half moons and squares give the work a contemporary flair.

Manolo Valdés, Madera con Colores

Valdés explores movement as central to the artistic process, the use of unbled colors as an important motif, and the destruction of a figure as essential to composition. These themes were ground-breaking when introduced by Picasso and Miró, and are still explored by Valdés – geometrical shapes, at the heart of a decomposed figure, allow other forms to be constructed from them.

Picasso, Nu assis appuyé sur des coussins, 1964

Valdés’ vertically and horizontally extended busts evoke an expansive movement surrounded by bold colors, directly adhering to the legacy of Miró. The pure and minimalistic faces, basic lines, and the color’s predominance over the form, reveal and demonstrate the artist’s talent and ability to navigate between figuration and abstraction, like his predecessor.

In turn, his mixed media works depict deconstructed human forms that mirror the style of Picasso. “When I put many eyes on one face, I put them because Picasso taught me that it’s possible to do that.” Manolo Valdés.

Manolo Valdés, Picasso como Pretexto I, 2022

This resonance is a story of filiation, and filiation mixes transmission and transgression. Throughout his work, Manolo Valdés, just like Picasso and Miró themselves, drew inspiration from old Masters while becoming an iconoclast, just like them: his artistic process mirrors the one they once had. Reconstructing form, colors, shapes and materials transcend the iconoclastic process to transform Valdés’ work into a true homage to art history and what his Masters have taught him.

A Resonance of Masters will be on view from November 29th to December 20th at Opera Gallery, located at 151 NE 41st St Suite 131, Miami, FL 33137.

Art Palm Beach Under New Leadership

Art Palm Beach Under New Leadership

Brand New Show Including New Celeb and Charity Partner

Major changes coming to a staple art show in Palm Beach. Art Palm Beach is the longest running fair dedicated to contemporary, emerging, and modern art in the area. But this year the owners of the LA Art Show, the most prestigious and innovative art show in America are bringing their knowledge and expertise to Palm Beach. “We will be creating a new and completely revamped Art Palm Beach said Kassandra Voyagis, the producer and director of the show. “Under our leadership, we will be taking this show in a new and exciting direction marrying both fairs in a dynamic state-of-the-art bicoastal enterprise.”

Before Art Palm Beach’s acquisition by Scott Diament and Rob Samuels of the Palm Beach Show Group, the fair was organized by IFAE founders Lee Ann & David Lester, the original founders of both Art Miami and Art Asia Hong Kong. Building on the successes of the past and the current stellar reputation of the LA Art Show this fair will be unlike any other.

Art Palm Beach will be held January 25th to the 29th, 2023 at the Palm Beach
County Convention Center. There will be more than 80 prestigious contemporary, emerging and modern art galleries including for the first time in South Florida, a platform with a rotating group of art institutions named DIVERSEartLA. DIVERSEartLA engages local communities by generating innovative ideas and driving social change through art. Renowned art curator Marisa Caichiolo and international artists like Marcos Lutyens will be in attendance focusing on immersive art experiences. Lutyens forward thinking artwork focuses on consciousness
and disrupting patterns of thinking, associations, and ways of existing in the world through exhibitions and performances. “Having Marcos Lutyens’ artistic practice in this year’s Art Palm Beach show is indicative of the level of artist and show we are bringing to Palm Beach,” said
V oyagis.

Curator Magalí Arriola shares her highlights of Meridians, Art Basel’s newest sector

Karim Crippa

Opening to collectors today, Meridians showcases ambitious, immersive artworks

Featuring 34 large-scale or time-based works, Art Basel’s newest sector is curated by Magalí Arriola, the director of Mexico City’s Museo Tamayo. In this interview, shes discusses her vision for Meridians and shares some of the sector’s highlights.

Karim Crippa: How has it been to work on Meridians so far?

Magalí Arriola: I started working on Meridians in May this year, just after the opening of the Venice Biennale, where I curated the Mexican Pavilion. That’s quite a short period of time, and it’s been intense! What has been important to me, first and foremost, is making people aware of this new sector and deciding on how to contextualize it within Art Basel Miami Beach. I’ve been approaching it with a very open mind and really appreciated the collaboration with the selection committee. We’ve thought a lot about the kind of discussions Meridians would be able to trigger. The challenge was to not force myself to curate a classic show based on a coherent argument. Instead, I wanted to create a landscape that would allow the works to dialogue with each other.

KC: How would you compare curating an art-fair sector with curating a group exhibition?

MA: I think that they are very different from each other, however what matters most is the starting point. For a group show, it’s usually a specific argument or topic, for an art-fair sector one starts from the proposals made by galleries. In both cases, one of the most stimulating factors is that you often have two categories of works – the ones that already exist and those that still need to be produced. We’ll have a little bit of both in Meridians, including quite a few historical pieces, such as a series of very early paintings by Allan McCollum (Petzel, Booth M12) that are crucial for understanding the later development of his practice. The sector will also feature New Orleans artist Tina Girouard’s performance Pinwheel [1977] (Anat EbgiBooth M27), which has been performed only once and will be recreated for the occasion. It’s a piece that blends the artistic practices of the 1970s with Native American influences. For yet-to-be-created works, we based our judgment on each artist’s practice as a whole.

Tina Girouard’s 1977 performance Pinwheel.

KC: There is a lot of talk about art as an experience. Do you feel it is possible to reconcile art that is critically engaged with this experience factor?

MA: Definitely, and it’s something I want to fight for. What I would like to achieve is for visitors to have an immersive, multisensory experience through works that spark critical discourse. A great example is Isaac Julien’s nine-channel video installation Lina Bo Bardi – A Marvellous Entanglement [2019] (Victoria Miro, Nara Roesler, Jessica Silverman; in collaboration with Ron Mandos, Booth M23), which is articulated around the work of the Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi. I’m quite excited about this piece, as it will not only allow viewers to experience Julien’s practice, but also give them the opportunity to revisit the radical oeuvre of a significant woman architect who based much of her practice on Brazilian vernacular culture. Another good example is Oscar Tuazon’s Quonset Tent [2016] (Chantal Crousel, Luhring Augustine, Eva Presenhuber, Booth M2). Its structure recalls that of a military tent, but it is recontextualized as an architectural hybrid, something between a sculpture and a shelter that people can get in and out of.

KC: As a Latin American curator, how do you relate to Art Basel Miami Beach?

MA: One of the things to which Art Basel Miami Beach has contributed is the encounter between Latin American art and professionals not only from the US, but also from Europe and Asia. So in addition to strengthening the bonds between cultural actors from South and North America, it also creates a conversation that branches out far beyond these two continents. Shared histories between Asia, Europe, and the Americas tend to be forgotten. Candice Lin’s work La Charada China (Tobacco Version) [2019] (François Ghebaly, Booth M29), which will also be on view in Meridians, addresses these intercontinental links critically – specifically the history of Chinese immigration to the Caribbean in the 19th century. It’s a powerful reminder that the relationship between Latin America and the rest of the world cannot be negotiated on cultural terms only.

This special body of original artwork was curated by Tanvi Pathare, a graduate of and now the Principal Instructor of Intermediate Advanced Drawing and Painting at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. Hagan Fine Art has been proud to represent Ms. Pathare and share her work with collectors for the past five years.

“All of the works are an individual expression of these artists’ work, but the red thread that connects them all is their ability to transcend life around them into moments of timeless beauty. I am fortunate to call them my colleagues and friends.” – Tanvi Pathare

The Florence Academy of Art is a small and dynamic art school in the Tuscan region capital city dedicated to the training of young artists through the combination of intense observation with advanced craft skills. Started by American painter Daniel Graves in 1991, the Academy focuses on teaching in the classical-realist tradition rooted in the 19th century, but also addresses the creative and professional position of the artist in a contemporary environment. The school is a branch of the International Academy of Fine Art and is recognized as a certificate program by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

“On Realism” includes eight pieces by Daniel Graves in this virtual show alongside works from FAA faculty members: Daniela Astone, Melissa Franklin Sanchez, Maureen Hyde, Vitaliy Shtanko, and Tanvi Pathare.

DRAWING AND PAINTING COURSES PROGRAM – FLORENCE SCHOOL

During the drawing course, students will learn how to use different materials, among the others, charcoal, sanguine (reddish drawing chalk) and pencil. In addition, they will have an introduction to the use of tempera, oil painting and acrylic colors. Using these materials, students will learn to portray still-life paintings and the human body, the latter with real models in person. They will practice copying famous artworks in order to exercising the techniques they learnt and, as a result, they will begin express their ideas and create their own style.

Other painting courses offered in our Florence school are:

OLD PAINTING TECHNIQUES
This course will give students the chance to enter the world of painting techniques belonging to the period between 14th and 16th century through the analysis of the most important artworks of such a period, from Giotto to Michelangelo. Students will learn the techniques through the study, the analysis and the reproduction of famous paintings with egg tempera, gold leaf and oil colors. The whole paintings’ creation process will be analyzed and practiced, from the preparation of supports to varnishing.

CONTEMPORARY PAINTING TECHNIQUES
The course is conceived in order to teach students facing the new artistic languages, using new support materials (plastic, specific kinds of canvasses, wood and metals) and painting techniques, from traditional colours to the use of mixed techniques, such as colour application with sponge, spatula and roller. The combination of new supports and painting techniques will help students to develop a new language and their personal painting style.

DRAWING AND PAINTING COURSES PROGRAM – MILAN SCHOOL

The Leonardo da Vinci school in Milan offers a design and painting course, which is held in a marvelous workshop only five minutes walk from the school. The painter has much experience and so much passion, which she is always able to use to help students. Normally lessons start with design, as it is always considered to be the base for all forms of artistic expression. In fact, a good design itself can be considered a finished and complete artistic work. The following step is introducing colour. It is necessary to know how to do various different techniques, to then be able to freely select the most suitable form of expression.
All of the above is summarized in the following program:

  1. Development of design with pencils: representation of shapes and their proportions.
  2. Learning of light and shade to give volume to the subject, using hatching.
  3. Introduction of colour using pastel and and clay techniques.
  4. Watercolour techniques. An undervalued technique, but a difficult one, which if done well gives excellent effects.
  5. Introduction to acrylics and how to use them.
  6. Work on canvas. Oil painting: an adaptable and versatile technique which allows a vast range of colours to be used.

Art Basel Miami Beach launches a new sector: Meridians

Curated by Magalí Arriola, Meridians will be dedicated to large-scale installations, videos, and performances

Art Basel is pleased to announce the launch of Meridians, a new sector dedicated to monumental artworks which will debut at the 18th edition of the Miami Beach show in December. The initiative will be spearheaded by Mexico City-based Magalí Arriola, Lead Curator for Latin America at KADIST and curator of Mexico’s participation at the 58th Venice Biennale.

‘I am thrilled to steer this fantastic project,’ she said. ‘Meridians brings enormous possibilities to Art Basel Miami Beach, creating a vibrant platform for large-scale sculptures, installations, and moving image, as well as for performance – which did not have a dedicated space at the fair until now.’

Meridians will present around 30 projects that push the limits of what can traditionally be shown at an art fair. It will take place in the newly-opened Miami Beach Convention Center’s Grand Ballroom, a 60,000 sq. ft. (5,600 m²) space directly connected to the exhibition halls.

Participating artists, galleries, and further information on the projects will be announced in September 2019.
