Bridget Finn, a seasoned figure in the American art world, has taken the helm as Director of Art Basel Miami Beach, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a fresh perspective to this prestigious international art fair. Her appointment marks a significant moment for Art Basel, as Finn becomes the first woman to lead the Miami Beach edition.  

Finn’s journey in the art world is marked by a diverse and dynamic career path. From her early days at the renowned Anton Kern Gallery in New York to her roles at Mitchell-Innes & Nash and Independent Curators International, she has honed her expertise in both the commercial and non-profit sectors of the art industry. Finn also co-founded Reyes Finn, a gallery in Detroit, demonstrating her entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to fostering artistic communities.  

Now, as Director of Art Basel Miami Beach, Finn is responsible for shaping the direction of this pivotal event in the Americas. Her vision emphasizes innovation, inclusivity, and a deeper engagement with the vibrant cultural landscape of Miami. She is committed to cultivating and expanding Art Basel’s network of galleries, collectors, and artists, while also strengthening collaborations with local museums, institutions, and cultural partners.

Luis Molina: Painting the Soul of Cuba

Luis Molina’s canvases are windows into the vibrant soul of Cuba, where Afro-Cuban folklore dances with the serene beauty of the countryside. His paintings, imbued with radiant colors and expressive brushstrokes, evoke a sense of joy and optimism that captivates the viewer.

Molina’s deep connection to his Cuban roots is evident in every aspect of his work. From the orishas and guajiros to the lush vegetation and vibrant wildlife, his paintings capture the essence of the island’s cultural heritage and natural beauty. He paints with the dazzling hues of the Cuban midday sun – greens, reds, and blues that shimmer and delight the eye.

A master of capturing the human spirit, Molina’s portraits are particularly striking. His subjects, often orishas, guajiros, and mulatas, possess an ethereal quality, their eyes seeming to peer beyond the canvas and into the viewer’s soul. His signature transparency technique, which allows glimpses of the background to peek through the foreground, adds another layer of depth and intrigue to his compositions.

Molina’s artistic journey began at the young age of 12, painting the intricate details of religious figures in a Havana ceramics factory. This early experience ignited a passion that led him to formal training at the prestigious Academy of Art San Alejandro, where he graduated in 1974.

Since then, Molina’s work has been exhibited extensively in the United States, Panama, and Spain. His paintings have graced the pages of “The Best of Oil Paintings” and have found homes in esteemed collections on both sides of the Atlantic.

With each brushstroke, Luis Molina invites us to experience the magic of Cuba, its folklore, its people, and its enduring spirit. His art is a celebration of cultural identity, a testament to the power of art to transcend borders and connect us to the deeper rhythms of life.

Chantae Elaine Wright: Redefining Identity Through Polymorphic Portraits

The context of her work is influenced by her multi-cultural familial history, personal narratives, and portraiture, whether it be painting.

Chantae Elaine Wright is a mixed media artist whose work challenges the conventional boundaries of identity and representation. Through a vibrant fusion of photography and painting, she crafts captivating portraits that delve into the complexities of “polymorphism” – the existence of multiple forms and identities within a single individual.

Wright’s artistic journey begins with photographic source material, often portraits and curated scenes from her own photoshoots. These images serve as the foundation for her exploration of polymorphism, where she layers acrylic, oil, China marker, pastel, charcoal, spray paint, and ink onto the photographed canvas. This dynamic interplay of mediums mirrors the multifaceted nature of identity itself.

Her work offers a glimpse into the lives of her subjects, inviting viewers to contemplate narratives that diverge from societal norms. Wright’s art confronts traditional notions of identity, particularly focusing on themes of disidentification – the conscious rejection of imposed labels and categories. This resonates deeply with her own experience as a Black, queer, female, Caribbean-American artist navigating a world often defined by rigid expectations and stereotypes.

By embracing polymorphism, Wright expands the narrative of “otherness” to encompass the rich tapestry of everyday lived experiences. Her art celebrates the fluidity and complexity of identity, challenging viewers to move beyond simplistic categorizations and embrace the diverse spectrum of human existence.

A graduate of Hunter College, Wright is currently pursuing her Master of Fine Arts degree at Florida International University. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at The Bonnier Gallery, the Ronald W. Reagan Presidential House, and the Miami Beach Visual Arts Gallery, among others. As she continues to evolve as an artist, Chantae Elaine Wright’s powerful and evocative portraits promise to spark important conversations about identity, representation, and the ever-shifting nature of self.

KX2: Ripple Effect

Deeply concerned with the urgent environmental issues facing our world, this exhibition culminates KX2’s ongoing exploration into the fragile relationship between urbanization and the environment, focusing on critical themes such as water infrastructure, climate change, flooding, and diminishing access to potable water. Through this body of work, the artists aim to reflect upon climate change’s impact on infrastructure and provoke a dialogue about the future of our communities and our planet.

KX2 is a collaboration combining the strengths of artists and sisters Ruth Avra and Dana Kleinman, who create sculptures merging metalwork and painting. Their works delve into the realm of data research, particularly focused on climate change, to shed light on environmental issues. Since establishing their artistic collaboration in 2007, KX2’s work has been featured in notable galleries and museums worldwide. Their work was leveraged to the international art scene with an invitation to represent the United States at the 2008 Beijing Biennale at the National Art Museum of China. Their work can be found in numerous private, corporate, and public art collections throughout North America. Avra and Kleinman currently reside with their families in Southern Florida.

The Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery is a museum-quality venue where artists from around the world come to exhibit thought-provoking contemporary artworks. Since 1965, the Broward College Central Campus Fine Arts Gallery has exhibited artworks from over 150 regional, national, and international artists such as Carl Andre, Hernan Bas, Judy Chicago, Angi Curreri, Yuri Dojc, Duane Hanson, Kenneth Huff, Nam June Paik, Pilar Tobin, and Pablo Picasso. In 2012, Broward College opened the Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery, located in the state-of-the-art Visual & Performing Arts Building. The Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery is a non-profit institution serving BC students, faculty, and the greater South Florida arts community.
