Visu Contemporary is pleased to announce Authenticity a solo exhibition of new paintings by artist Brandon Clarke. The exhibit will be on display at the gallery from April 20th to May 11th, 2023—with an opening reception on April 20th from 6pm to 8pm. Brandon Clarke is an emerging abstract expressionist who has recently won numerous awards. Authenticity will feature Clarke’s latest creations which continue to explore the theme of self-discovery. Clarke uses a unique combination of words, color, and composition to create tension while juxtaposing various techniques, often within the backside of the canvas, to expose hidden messages. Clarke’s technique and material choices express literally and metaphorically characteristics on the canvas to imply the question of, “who are we really within the framework of our lives and society?” As an African-American, the murder of George Floyd sparked raw emotions intensifying Clarke’s pursuit to take his art to a higher level. “It made me realize that through the years I’ve found clever ways to conceal the most wounded parts of my being. While painting, the canvas exposes those wounds, and it has an ability to speak to me as I search for what is real and authentic,” said Clarke. Clarke is a second-generation artist. He was first introduced to art in the back of his grandmother’s house where he used to paint with her as a child and her teachings are still ever present in his work. Trained as an Architectural Designer, with two master’s degrees from Hampton and Auburn Universities, Clarke has worked with one of Miami’s most reputable architecture firms for nearly a decade.
‘I’ve found the more vulnerable I am, the more real I am able to become. Thus, the more truth-telling I do about my actions, the more authentic I become. Through painting, I am the most authentic version of myself. I know there are people who haven’t had the right tools to unlock who they really are. My art provides a lens to look into the lost parts of our souls, and to call out authenticity. This exhibit is a reflection of my journey towards self-awareness, and I hope it will inspire others to embark on a similar journey,” said Clarke.“ Brandon Clarke’s work is a testament to the power of art to spark awareness and encourage self-reflection. We are honored to host this exhibit and share his talent with the community,” said the gallery’s owner, Blake Pearson.
