Argentine visual artist Guadalupe Carrizo presents Hortalizas, a project that brings together art, ecology, research, and environmental consciousness through a sustained investigation of herbicide-resistant plants and their relationship to contemporary systems of agriculture, territory, and control.

Presented with Ceibo Gallery at Laundromat Art Space, Hortalizas focuses on plants commonly classified as weeds, wild growth, or undesirable species within agro-industrial systems. Rather than treating these plants as invasive or disposable, Carrizo repositions them as resilient organisms that embody adaptation, resistance, and the capacity of nature to respond to human intervention.

The project centers on ten herbicide-resistant plant species identified in Argentina, particularly those resistant to glyphosate, according to the National Service of Agrifood Health and Quality (SENASA). Carrizo transforms these plants into both subject and material, creating a series of illustrations with pigments extracted from the resistant species themselves.

Through this process, botanical matter becomes more than a medium. It becomes a carrier of memory, territory, and environmental history. The plants that agro-industrial systems attempt to eliminate reappear in the artwork as agents of survival and persistence.

Hortalizas invites viewers to reconsider the language through which vegetation is categorized and controlled. Terms such as “weed” or “undesirable species” are placed under scrutiny as the exhibition examines the social, economic, and environmental values embedded within contemporary food and agricultural systems.

The exhibition also proposes a broader reflection on food sovereignty and ecological balance. By emphasizing the multidimensional role of these plants, Carrizo connects agriculture with questions of health, environmental sustainability, social structures, and the right of communities to maintain meaningful relationships with their territories.

At the center of the project is a reversal of perspective: what is typically regarded as a threat becomes a source of knowledge. What is targeted for eradication emerges instead as evidence of adaptation and resilience.

Carrizo’s practice demonstrates that nature is not passive. It responds, changes, persists, and resists.

Through the intersection of artistic practice, environmental activism, and research, Hortalizas asks audiences to reconsider the systems that determine what may be cultivated, protected, controlled, eliminated, or allowed to survive.

Guadalupe Carrizo is a visual artist from Tucumán, Argentina, whose practice explores the relationships between nature, territory, environmental transformation, and resistance.

Ceibo
Ceibo is a space oriented to building enduring artistic careers, with the aim of elevating the presence and positioning Latin American art within the U.S. and international markets.

Founded and directed by Brenda Groy and Gabriela Karpiuk, Ceibo emphasizes the work of Latin American artists as creators of contemporary narratives grounded in their specific contexts yet relevant to global debates, which position the region as a hub of aesthetic and conceptual innovation.

Our gallery serves as a facilitated space to mediate between cultural contexts, in order to translate, contextualize, and generate new interpretations of Latin American art within a global context. We understand the international market not merely in commercial terms, but as a gathering ground open for cultural exchange.
