A right of passage creates uncertainty and opportunity to choose from a range of possibilities. Within this liminal state, ambiguity becomes the catalyst for a transition between here and there, past and future.

We dwell in an environment where hierarchies are temporarily dissolved, tradition becomes uncertain and boundaries are blurred. In this state of flux, our sense of identity dissipates and brings disorientation but also the possibility of new perspectives.

The focus of this group exhibition is to illustrate how the liminal has impacted the substance of our individual practices. By articulating our ideas, we navigate through conflicting points of view that lead us into troublesome but deeply reflective spaces. This experience facilitates profound realizations and the reconstruction of our sense of self, thus enabling us to persist in order to become confident creatives.

About the Artists:

Patricia Monclús was born in Burbank California (1989) to a Colombian mother and a Spanish father, Patricia Monclús’s education is dictated by a back and forth migration pattern between the three cities (North Hollywood, Palmira, and Tarragona). Transilience became a lifestyle and omission must’ve become a strategy to cope with departure, as well as a sense of detachment or a certain uninterest to establish friendships. Patricia manages to complete her education, and spends the next two years at a local academy, studying film production. Unhappy with the business-oriented program, she applies to the visual arts curriculum at La Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Cali, Colombia. Later on in 2012, migrates one more time to Florida, where she currently lives. Patricia completes her Associate of Arts in Broward College and later her BFA in Florida University, New World School of the Arts. She graduates in April 2018. Her work has been exhibited at Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery (2014-2015), The Boston Printmakers Biennial (2015), Art Basel’s The Yard at CasaLin in Miami (2016-2017) and Cisneros-Fontanals Art Foundation in Miami (2018).

Mateo Serna Zapata born in Colombia (1992), Miami-raised, Mateo is a photo-based artist. Migrating to the United States in 2000, leaving behind most of his family and relocating within Miami every other year after that has influenced his work tremendously. Mateo uses photography to seek and document human communication. His work has been exhibited in MOCA, Miami Dade College Gallery, New World Gallery, and Cisneros-Fontanals Art Foundation in Miami. Mateo received his Associate in Arts from Miami Dade College and his BFA from University of Florida through New World School of the Arts. He is currently doing a one-year residency at the Bakehouse Art Complex.

Valeria Guillén was born and raised in Tegucigalpa, Honduras (1992). Guillén studied in a trilingual school where French was the main language of communication. Experiences such as the hurricane Mitch (1998) and the coup d’etat (June 2009) marked and redefined her life. After high school, she studied a two-year preparatory program focusing her research in Economics and Sociology. In 2013 she migrated to Miami where she completed her Associate of Arts in Broward College and later her Bachelor of Arts in New World School of the Arts, graduating in April 2018. Guillen has been working inside the art world as an art handler, installer and packaging artworks.

Stephanie Eti Hadad is first generation American-Israeli born in Philadelphia, PA (1989). She received her BFA from the University of Florida, New World School of the Arts in Miami, Florida. Hadad has exhibited her work throughout Miami Dade College galleries (2013-2018), Art Basel’s CasaLin Breakfast Reception in Miami (2016,2017) and Cisneros-Fontanals Art Foundation in Miami (2018). Stephanie resides and continues her practice in Miami, FL.

Charlisa Montrope was born in Castries, Saint Lucia and attended the University of Florida, New World School of the Arts, receiving a B.F.A in drawing in 2018. Montropse currently lives and works in Miami, Florida.

Melanie Sarria was born and raised in Barranquilla Colombia in 1992, she migrated to the United States at the age of 14 in 2007. Upon arrival, she struggled to communicate at school due to a language barrier. After a tremendous effort to adapt to the new environment, she made it to Miami Dade College and studied Architecture for a year. During the time spent in the school of architecture, she attended drawing and sculpture classes that eventually made her jump into the art world. Although she spent a short period of time in the architectural field, her interest in the built environment has played a big role in her practice. In 2015 She received her Associates in Art from Miami Dade College and earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Florida in 2018. Her work has been exhibited at the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (2018), Art Basel Miami 2016-2017(The Yard @ Casalin), Pinecrest Gardens (2017), Coral Gables Art Museum (2016) and New World School of the Arts Gallery (2016, 2017). She now resides in Miami where she continues her practice.
