Exploring Identity and Language: Marco Caridad Presents ‘A Particularly Vicious Tongue’ at Mundo Arte Gallery
North Miami Beach, FL – March 31, 2024 – Marco Caridad, the Miami-based artist, is set to showcase his latest exhibition, “A Particularly Vicious Tongue,” at Mundo Arte Gallery from April 11 to May 9, 2024. Curated by Fernando Fernández and featuring texts by renowned art critic Katherine Chacón, the exhibition explores identity, language, and societal norms through Caridad’s expressive and thought-provoking artworks.
Born in Maracaibo, Venezuela, in 1985, Marco Caridad’s practice is deeply rooted in his journey as a Latinx individual with indigenous heritage, an immigrant, and a member of the LGBTQ+ community. Through his unique blend of expressionism, Caridad delves into the intricacies of existing within collective frameworks while challenging established conventions. His works serve as a dialogue between his internal experiences and the external social landscape, reflecting a constant process of self-awareness and introspection.
In “A Particularly Vicious Tongue,” Caridad employs the motif of the “tongue” – both organic and linguistic – to explore themes of sensuality, eroticism, and the power of language in shaping individual and societal identities. Drawing inspiration from LGBTQ+ literature, his artworks serve as pleas for the inclusion of diverse narratives and realities, highlighting the importance of embracing new stories and perspectives.
The exhibition features various mediums, including painting, video performance, installation, and mixed media. Highlights include “Untitled,” a painting series derived from Caridad’s video performance “Desigual Makeup,” which challenges heteronormative societal norms through expressive body paint. Additionally, the series “Lenguas afuera,” “Hombres de maíz, barro o madera,” and the installation “Metrópolis” explore the dichotomy between tenderness and violence using rolled and tied books as a symbolic medium.
Caridad’s works are characterized by their narrative complexity and emotive depth. They invite viewers to engage in contemplative reflection on the human experience in a diverse and evolving world. Through his bold use of symbolism and imagery, Caridad presents a visually stunning and intellectually stimulating body of work that resonates on both personal and societal levels.
The opening reception for “A Particularly Vicious Tongue” will occur on Thursday, April 11, from 6 to 9 pm at Mundo Arte Gallery, 13525 Biscayne Blvd, North Miami Beach, FL 33181. Admission is free, and all art enthusiasts are invited to attend and immerse themselves in Marco Caridad’s rich tapestry of artistic vision.
