Friday, Jan. 19 at 2:00 pm – Alex Katz: Small Paintings

Lanya Snyder, Assistant Curator, Boca Raton Museum of Art

Ms Snyder will present a fascinating discussion ad PowerPoint presentation on the current exhibition of the artists’ works at the Boca Raton Museum of Art. The exhibition comprises of works of the less explored side of the artist’s practice by exhibiting Katz’s small paintings alongside his iconic large and distinct canvases. The small works present an alternative perspective to the artist’s larger and more familiar works and reveal a side to his process that is highly gestural and instinctive. “Alex Katz: Small Paintings” exhibition is on view through April 8, 2018 at the museum. https://www.bocamuseum.org/exhibitions/alex-katz-small-paintings

Widely known for his large-scale paintings, Katz began working on a small-scale early in his career as a reaction to the larger works of his predecessors. It wasn’t until 1962, after working for over a decade, when he transitioned to painting on much larger canvases. Throughout his career, now spanning more than 60 years, Katz has continuously produced small paintings. The small paintings can be thought of as preparatory sketches or studies. While autonomous in their own right, they often serve as a starting point or a draft for his larger works.

The small paintings have a powerful visual presence with nuanced subtleties of texture, color, and form. The details in the brush strokes on this intimate scale invite the viewer to establish a closer physical and spatial relationship to the work. The small paintings were crucial in the early stages of Katz’s career, while the artist developed and refined his style, and have remained a part of his vigorous practice for decades. Though some approach abstraction, particularly the landscapes and cityscapes, the works are integral to understanding Alex Katz’s body of work.

ArtPalmBeach Collector Lecture Series – Saturday, January 20th 2 – 3 PM, No Charge for Lecture Series

“A Conversation with Jose Bedia on his Works, his Travels and on Collecting Art”

Presented by Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator of the NSU Art Museum of Fort Lauderdale and artist Jose Bedia

This year’s ArtPalmBeach Visionary honoree will be engaging in a lecture led by Bonnie Clearwater. Together, Bedia and Clearwater will trace the methods, inspirations and sentiments behind his prized works, the experiences and travels that informed them, and the state of collecting today.

The extraordinary artistic legacy of Jose Bedia goes beyond the contributions of the Cuban and Latin American modernist vanguard, of crossing and merging movements and styles between the western and peripheral artistic experiences. Bedia’s contemporaneity incorporates a multitude of cultural influences, each enclosing upon the other in multiple developments of power, loss, and production. Bedia is not only a Miami artist. While he is an American of Cuban origin, he is universal in his symbolism, as his works address the complex processes of human exchange and the linguistic, economic, racial, gendered, religious and cultural factors involved in these exchanges. At this year’s ArtPalmBeach, Bedia will be honored as the 2018 Visionary Award Winner, Trotta Bono Contemporary, New York will be presenting a one man show exhibiting an new collection of works that are sure to inspire.
