Art Basel 2027 Qatar edition and year-round market development program, strengthening its role as the premier art show for the MENASA region
Art Basel Qatar Announces 82 Galleries for Its 2027 Edition and Expands Its Year-Round Art Market Program
The second edition will bring together 80 solo-artist presentations from galleries representing 37 countries and territories, reinforcing Qatar’s growing role in the international art market.
Art Basel has announced the participating galleries for the second edition of Art Basel Qatar, scheduled for January 28–30, 2027, with preview days on January 26 and 27. The fair will return to Msheireb Downtown Doha, taking place across M7, Doha Design District, and selected public spaces.
Presented in partnership with Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) and QC+, with Visit Qatar as Lead Partner, the 2027 edition will feature 80 solo-artist presentations by 82 galleries from 37 countries and territories.
Approximately half of the participating artists are from the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (MENASA), while more than one-third of the galleries maintain spaces in the region.
The announcement also introduces a year-round initiative designed to strengthen relationships among collectors, galleries, and cultural institutions, extending Art Basel Qatar’s influence beyond the annual fair.
Between: A Curatorial Exploration of Cultural Exchange
The 2027 edition will be organized around the theme between / بين, developed under the artistic direction of Iraqi curator Wassan Al-Khudhairi, in collaboration with Vincenzo de Bellis, Art Basel’s Chief Artistic Officer and Global Director of Fairs.
The theme examines the spaces where cultures, histories, identities, and artistic perspectives intersect. It considers how artistic practices emerge through relationships between individuals, communities, and geographical regions.
Rather than organizing the fair around conventional group presentations, Art Basel Qatar will continue its solo-artist format, allowing participating galleries to develop focused presentations that offer audiences a deeper engagement with individual artistic practices.
Al-Khudhairi describes between as a space of possibility where different histories and perspectives encounter one another, generating new ways of seeing.
The curatorial approach also seeks to challenge perceptions of the MENASA region as primarily a recipient of international artistic influences. Instead, the exhibition positions artists from the region as active contributors to global artistic discourse.

Beyond the Fair: A Year-Round Art Market Development Program
One of the most significant developments accompanying the 2027 edition is Art Basel Qatar’s expansion into year-round programming.
The initiative seeks to strengthen Qatar’s art market infrastructure by developing sustained relationships between collectors, galleries, and institutions.
A central component is Collectors Majlis, an invitation-only educational program designed for approximately 30 to 40 emerging and prospective collectors.
Launching in October 2026, the initiative combines masterclasses, workshops, collection visits, cultural encounters, and discussions about the practical dimensions of art collecting.
Participants will explore subjects including:
- Understanding the structure and operation of the international art market.
- Building and managing art collections.
- Developing relationships with galleries and artists.
- Understanding how artworks are bought and sold.
- Strengthening confidence and knowledge in collecting contemporary art.
The program will include contributions from Art Basel leadership, collectors, cultural institutions, and regional art professionals.
Among the announced participants are Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums; Noah Horowitz, CEO of Art Basel; Vincenzo de Bellis; Wassan Al-Khudhairi; and other prominent figures in the region’s cultural sector.
Additional collector encounters are planned across Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, India, Greece, and other international locations.
Developing a Sustainable Regional Art Market
For Art Basel CEO Noah Horowitz, the expansion reflects a long-term commitment to Qatar and the broader MENASA region.
The initiative aims to cultivate new generations of collectors while creating opportunities for sustained artistic discovery, professional exchange, and market development.
The strategy represents an important evolution in the contemporary art fair model, in which cultural programming, collector education, institutional collaboration, and commercial activity increasingly operate as interconnected components.
Rather than limiting engagement to a few exhibition days, Art Basel Qatar intends to establish an ongoing cultural and commercial presence in the region.
Doha’s Expanding Cultural Landscape
Art Basel Qatar 2027 will coincide with an extensive program of exhibitions and cultural events organized by Qatar Museums and other institutions throughout Doha.

Art Basel Qatar and the Future of Cultural Exchange
The expansion of Art Basel Qatar reflects broader changes in the international art market, particularly the growing visibility of cultural institutions, artists, and collectors from the MENASA region.
By combining solo-artist presentations, international gallery participation, collector education, and collaborations with regional institutions, the fair seeks to establish a model that connects commercial activity with sustained cultural development.
Its curatorial theme, between / بين, provides a conceptual framework for this ambition, presenting artistic exchange as a dynamic relationship among different cultural histories and contemporary experiences.
As Doha continues to expand its cultural infrastructure, Art Basel Qatar positions itself as both an international marketplace and a platform for dialogue between regional artistic production and the wider world.
