The55Project Art Foundation is pleased to announce RE.IMAGINATION, a group exhibition curated by Dr. Ross Karlan and hosted by Fundación Pablo Atchugarry. The exhibition marks an important milestone in the ongoing collaboration between the two institutions.

Bringing together a diverse group of international artists, RE.IMAGINATION explores the cyclical nature of history and memory while expanding The55Project’s curatorial scope. Significantly, this exhibition represents The55Project’s first group show featuring non-Brazilian artists, reinforcing its commitment to cross-cultural narratives, intertwined histories, and global perspectives.

Conceptual Framework

The exhibition draws its conceptual premise from Jorge Luis Borges’s micro-story La Trama. The narrative follows a betrayed gaucho whose death in a remote Argentine province mirrors the assassination of Julius Caesar with what Borges describes as an “uncanny symmetry.” From Borges’s conclusion that “fate takes pleasure in repetitions, variants, and symmetries,” the exhibition proposes that history is not a linear chronicle but rather a lattice of recurring motifs.

In RE.IMAGINATION, the participating artists treat the past not as a fixed archive, but as raw material to be reconstructed and recontextualized. Through their distinct artistic practices, they examine themes such as race, religion, gender, nature, memory, and migration—producing a composite portrait of both the present and the future.

Spanning references from prehistory to the cyber age, these reimaginings collapse multiple epochs into a single field of vision. Past and present do not merely coexist; they resonate, revealing history as an ongoing cycle of repetition and transformation.

Curator Dr. Ross Karlan envisions the exhibition space as one in which artists inhabit this “lattice” of history. By navigating diverse geographies and narratives, the works illuminate how matter and storytelling can simultaneously hold traces of inheritance and renewal.
